Israel and Palestine – the propaganda battle for Christmas

1

I guess it should not surprise us to see both the Israeli and the Palestinian governments vying for support from the Christian West by demonstrating their love for Christmas.

Both governments released official videos this Christmas (featured below), highlighting how Christmas-friendly (and Christian-friendly) their governments are.

Netanyahu’s video is very explicit about the way his country embraces religious minorities in contrast to so many of his intolerant neighbours. Frankly, I find his rhetoric as sickening as it is misleading.

Certainly I would prefer to be a Christian living in Israel than in some of the West’s other staunch Middle-Eastern allies, such as Saudi Arabia or Jordan, but the truth is that the current Israeli government has done little to stop the recent ‘price tag’ attacks by settlers against churches and monasteries. Netanyahu has voiced official disapproval but at the same time he has enlarged the settlements from which these attacks are carried out!

The Palestinian video is wordless. I wish it said more. At least it does illustrate what the majority of Christians in the West seem to have forgotten – namely, that the Christian population of Israel/Palestine is almost entirely Palestinian.

Message to Bibi and ‘Christian’ Zionists,

Seven times since 2005, I have sojourned to ‘your ancient land’ which many call holy- but it is in pieces-bantustans- enabled and sustained by US policies and misled Christians who support the settlements-and ALL are illegal under international law.

The establishment of Israel’s very statehood was contingent upon upholding the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and every Member State is obligated to hold ALL other Member States to it.

Article 13.2 affirms “Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.”

States, nations, government have obligations. People have RIGHTS.

On May 14, 1948, The Declaration of the Establishment of Israel enshrined:

“On the day of the termination of the British mandate and on the strength of the United Nations General Assembly declare The State of Israel will be based on freedom, justice and peace as envisaged by the prophets of Israel: it will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion it will guarantee freedom of religion [and] conscience and will be faithful to the Charter of the United Nations.”

IMAGINE what a wonderful world it could be-when Israel honors THAT promise!

PS: Jesus was never a Christian, he was born, lived and died a nonviolent Palestinian devout Jewish road warrior who rose up against a corrupt temple and agitated the Roman Occupying Forces.

Until we who claim to follow Him- DO what he taught -such as “put down the sword” and “pray for, forgive, bless, love ones enemies” we are as big a hypocrite as Bibi is!
