Israeli conductor Ilan Volkov was arrested last week and briefly detained at the Gaza border after protesting against Israel’s actions in Gaza. It came just days after he used the stage at London’s Royal Albert Hall for something far riskier than an encore. After leading the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Ilan made an impassioned plea calling on Israel to stop the “madness” in Gaza. Now the maestro has emerged as one of the rare Israeli cultural figures publicly defying the government’s war, using both his music and his voice to demand action.
