US seeks UN approval for Gaza force with two-year mandate

The Trump administration has reportedly sent a draft resolution to UN Security Council members which would establish an international security force in Gaza with a two-year mandate.
The draft resolution would give the US and participating nations a broad mandate to govern Gaza and provide security through the end of 2027, with the possibility of extensions, the Axios news site reported.
A senior American official told Axios that the draft resolution will be discussed this week among the members of the UN Security Council, with the aim of bringing it to a vote in the coming weeks and deploying the first international troops in Gaza in January.
The so-called International Stabilisation Force will be in charge of securing the Gaza Strip’s borders with Israel and Egypt, ensuring the safety of civilians and humanitarian zones. The ISF “will train and provide support to Palestinian police forces that will operate in Gaza after they have been screened, vetted and approved”.
