Israel says it has killed a commander of the militant group Hezbollah in an air strike on the Lebanese capital, Beirut.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the man was responsible for ordering a rocket attack that killed 12 people in a football field in the Druze village of Majdal Shams in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights at the weekend.
The IDF said the strike targeted was Fuad Shukr, also known as Muhsin Shukr, on Tuesday evening in a residential area in south Beirut that is known as a stronghold of Hezbollah.
The strike also killed three civilians including two children, medical and security sources told the Reuters news agency.
Lebanon’s Al Manar TV cited the Lebanese health ministry as reporting 74 people injured along with three killed in the attack around Hezbollah’s Shura Council, a decision-making body, in the Haret Hreik neighbourhood.
Lebanese security sources told the Reuters news agency the operative had survived. However, Israel’s public broadcaster, and the IDF, claimed Shukr had been killed.
A senior security source from another country in the region confirmed Shukr had died of wounds sustained in the strike.
Hezbollah’s long-awaited statement on Wednesday said Israel had attacked a residential building in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a stronghold for the group, and that “a number of citizens” had been killed and others wounded.
It said Shukr “was present in this building at the time,” but that the group was still waiting for definitive results on his fate.
