Democrats may boycott Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress next month, as divisions over his conduct of the war in Gaza divide leaders in Washington and Tel Aviv.
Dozens of Democrats have told CNN they were considering skipping Netanyahu’s planned July 24 speech, amid a backdrop of growing uncertainty for the direction of the bloody nine-month-old conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Personal tensions between US President Joe Biden and Netanyahu were also evident. The White House cancelled a meeting with Israeli officials after Netanyahu released a video, on Wednesday AEST, falsely claiming Washington had cut off its supply of weapons.
Of Netanyahu’s visit, Representative Ro Khanna said on Sunday: “If he wants to come to speak to members of Congress about how to end the war and release hostages, I would be fine doing that.”
“But I’m not going to sit in a one-way lecture,” he told NBC.
Independent senator Bernie Sanders and Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez both posted on X, with Ocasio-Cortez saying: “This man [Netanyahu] should not be addressing Congress. He is a war criminal… His invitation should be revoked. It should’ve never been sent in the 1st place.”
